BetMGM confirms first £250,000 Cheltenham drop winner

Following the conclusion of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, BetMGM can confirm the first of two lucky £250,000 winners.

Steve from County Durham became the first winner of two BetMGM £250,000 giveaways during this year’s Cheltenham Festival, having placed a £2 qualifying bet with the online bookmaker.

UK Director at BetMGM, Sam Behar, said: “After a sensational four days at Cheltenham, which included Wednesday’s feature, the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, we’re delighted to announce the first winner of our Cheltenham £500,000 giveaway and to have given one BetMGM punter a sensational surprise!

“Steve has become our first winner and we’ve credited his account with an unbelievable £250,000. We think it’s fair to say he never dreamt of backing a winner as good as this one!”

BetMGM’s first £250,000 winner, Steve from County Durham, said: “It hasn’t sunk in, I’m still sitting here thinking ‘is this real?’. Until the money hits the bank, I’ll probably be saying the same.

“I’ve always had a dabble, I’m not a massive bettor but I do like a bit of a flutter. We always have a family day for the Grand National.

“I do football and horse racing betting via BetMGM and the first day [of Cheltenham] I was off work and I went to Sedgefield Racecourse with a friend of mine. They had the big screen up for watching the live races, so I had a flutter on BetMGM and I saw it [the £500,000 Giveaway] in the offers and thought, ‘why not, you never know!’, which is why it’s a massive surprise.

“I think some of it is going to go into my retirement fund – I’m planning for retirement and this is probably going into investments to put away for that – but some of it is probably going to go to paying off some car loans and doing a bit of house improvement.”

Oddschecker Media Group acquires SuperScommesse

Oddschecker Global Media (OGM), a global technology company that offers the world's leading odds comparison site and a betting destination for millions of users, this week confirmed the acquisition of acclaimed Italian sports network SuperScommesse from Catena Media.

The deal sees OGM further expand into Europe’s second-largest betting market to consolidate its position as the country’s number-one sports betting advertising company, organically complementing its other media partnerships already operational with Gazzetta (La Gazzetta dello Sport) and DAZN, which leverage tens of millions of unique users and two popular TV shows between them.

SuperScommesse furnishes OGM with deep local expertise, featuring a team that has proven itself adept at driving sustained growth in the market, allied to a recognizable and trusted local-language brand. In addition, its tech stack and tools will deliver network efficiencies to the acquiring group’s brands in other markets, while OGM’s own technology will improve SuperScommesse’s services and fan engagement across a loyal customer base.

“As the growth of sports betting in this sports-mad market continues apace, we wanted to double down on our presence in this key territory,” said Stuart Simms, CEO of Oddschecker Media Group. “We see SuperScommesse as the ideal strategic complement to our strong Italian footprint.

“We’re looking forward to servicing its customer base with an enhanced product that combines the Oddschecker DNA with its well-regarded brand name and local expertise in a market that still has huge growth potential as it builds out an online, cashless identity.

“This digital tide is only rolling one way, so the synergies are as obvious as they are natural: the Italian market allows for odds comparison as a consumer service, and we remain the pre-eminent odds comparison provider.”

This latest acquisition will further bolster the effectiveness of the Confido Network, a cutting-edge affiliate partnership network - which covers over 1,000 deals from 200+ global operators - announced by OGM earlier in November 2023.

Betting industry urges great cooperation on safer gambling marketing

Social media giants are being urged to co-operate with the betting and gaming industry to limit marketing seen by young people and problem gamblers. Standards body, The Betting and Gaming Council, want to implement new measures for online adverts but are being undermined by social media platforms. BGC Chief Executive Michael Dugher has written to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer MP, urging her to put pressure on social media platforms as part of the Government’s drive to tackle problem gambling among the young in particular. Launching the recent Gambling White Paper Mrs Frazer proposed measures that specifically looked at the under 25 age group. In his letter, Mr Dugher explains that an earlier BGC drive saw social media platforms allow the public to opt-out from receiving betting and gaming advertising. However, members say they need further cooperation to deliver other measures – in particular for those who have signed up to the industry self-exclusion tool GAMSTOP. The industry wants a ‘marketing suppression scheme’ which it says would stop 300,000 people registered to GAMPSTOP from receiving direct marketing on social media. In a letter to DCMS Secretary of State Mrs Frazer, Mr Dugher says: “This is impossible to achieve without the cooperation of the social media platforms themselves. This is a sensible solution, which BGC members are keen on implementing, but we cannot do so without the cooperation of social media platforms. “I would urge you to help on this matter by calling on social media platforms to finally cooperate with the BGC and make the relevant functionality available, so we can help protect the most vulnerable.” It would also like social media platforms to limit the frequency of ads to specific age groups, something members cannot do without cooperation. BGC members have already taken major steps to ensure only those legally allowed to bet see online marketing for regulated betting and gaming products. Currently all social media advertisements for BGC members must be targeted at those aged over 25, unless platforms can provide evidence to verify the accuracy of their targeting to over 18s. A new BGC code of conduct was also introduced placing a ban on football clubs using their social media accounts - which are popular with youngsters – posting direct marketing on betting odds and sites. The regulated betting and gaming industry in the U.K. supports 110,000 jobs, generates £4.2 billion in tax and contributes £7.1 billion to the economy. Around 22.5 million adults in the UK bet each month and we are encouraged by the latest figures from the Gambling Commission which show the rate of problem gambling among adults in the U.K. is 0.3%.

The surge in online sports events backed up by a rise in the number of esports tournaments offers stable growth opportunities for the betting industry. For instance, according to the report by the U.K. Gambling Commission, there was a huge 2922% year-on-year rise in esports betting revenue from March 2019 to March 2020.

Major players in the global betting industry now operate via official websites and online platforms to cater to the increased demand for sports betting. Additionally, the market players are expanding their presence across countries with supportive regulatory compliance. For instance, in December 2021, Unikrn Inc., a global esports betting & entertainment media company introduced its betting platform in Canada and Brazil. In addition to this launch, the company has further announced to increase its presence across a greater number of regulated markets in 2023.

The lives of multiple households around the globe have been affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this situation led to the cancellation of worldwide sports matches and the closure of land-based casinos and betting shops. However, the pandemic expanded the online sports betting industry due to the rise of esports and virtual sporting events. The popularity of online sports betting increased during the pandemic with an upsurge in the number of betting participants. For instance, according to a study conducted by Public Health England, online casino gambling had seen growth by nearly 9.0% during the pandemic. Furthermore, as per the GB Gambling Commission survey, betting habits among people have changed due to Covid-19, with mobile devices continuing to be the most popular medium for gambling. The survey also found a massive inclination towards esports betting across the globe.

World Cup drives illegal sports betting activity in UK

The number of U.K. punters visiting unregulated online black market gambling sites tripled during the World Cup, new research reveals.

In December alone 250,000 people visited unregulated, black market sites compared to around 80,000 during the same month the previous year, with a similar jump in November.

Leading research team Yield Sec conducted the new analysis for the Betting and Gaming Council to assess the scale of black market gambling last year, including during the Qatar World Cup.

Analysts also found online traffic to sites advertising services to problem gamblers who had self-excluded from UK operators, rose almost 83 per cent.

All regulated betting operators in the UK are signed up to GamStop – a self-exclusion system that automatically blocks access across all regulated operators.

But the landmark report by Yield Sec, stated: “Non-GamStop sites have generated 82.68 per cent more visits from 26.88 per cent more unique customers during Nov-Dec 2022 compared to the previous two month period, spending on average 78 per cent more time on site.”

During that two month period alone over 64,500 vulnerable players searched for black market sites offering betting which circumvents GamStop.

The research also discovered peaks in traffic to black market sites in March during Cheltenham and June during Ascot, indicating horse racing is being heavily targeted by illegal gambling outfits.

Industry experts established it takes less than 30 seconds to sign up to a black market site before placing your first bet, compared to an average of 12 minutes with a regulated UK operator.

This is because UK operators must conduct strict identity and age verification checks to prevent problem gambling and fraud.

Michael Dugher, CEO at the Betting and Gaming Council, said: “This research exposes the dire threat the growing unsafe, unregulated black market poses to punters.

“While the regulated industry was going to great lengths to protect young people during the World Cup and adhering to strict regulations and promoting safer gambling, black market operators were preying on the vulnerable.

“These unlicensed sites offer none of the safer gambling tools promoted by our members, they pay no tax and employ no one, they do not contribute a penny to sport or services tackling gambling harm, and they do nothing to protect vulnerable players.

“This data shows the World Cup drove a range of worrying gambling trends in the UK - not in the regulated sector as predicted by anti-gambling prohibitionists - but in the unsafe unregulated black market online.

“There has been too much complacency about the threat of the black market. Rather than dismissing the problem, the regulator and the Government need to tread extremely carefully and resist blanket, intrusive affordability checks at low levels that push even more punters to these dangerous sites.”

Overall, the number of visits to black market websites from the UK increased by 46 per cent in 2022, with around 148,000 customers accessing illicit sites each month.

Separate research by PwC found the number of customers using unlicensed betting websites more than doubled, from 210,000 in 2019 to 460,000 in 2020 and the money staked in the billions.

Ismail Vali, Founder and CEO at Yield Sec, said: “This trend of increased illegal gambling activity during prominent sporting events reflects the ever-present threat that illegal operators pose to players and the audience.”

Meanwhile, the number of TV betting adverts shown on TV during the World Cup group stages fell by 34 per cent compared to the World Cup in 2018, figures have revealed.

Under the voluntary Whistle-to-Whistle ban by BGC members, TV betting commercials for regulated operators cannot be shown from five minutes before a match kicks off until five minutes after it ends, before the 9pm watershed.

A report last year found that the ban had led to a 97% reduction in the number of such ads being seen by children at that time.
