PokerStars has once again exceeded expectations in Southern Europe. The Galactic Series, one of the most popular series for players in France, Spain, and Portugal, generated a total prize pool of €8 million, over €1 million above the guarantee. The prize pool was distributed across 261 events, with more than 343,000 total entries. The highlight of the series was the Main Event, which paid out €365,025 over the three-week period.

Throughout the series, players had the opportunity to earn additional Silver and Gold Passes by participating in the Galactic Stars Battle. Players opted in to support a PokerStars Ambassador, and all those who backed the leading Ambassador each week were entered into a freeroll for a chance to win a Silver Power Pass.

In Spain, captains “WilloelPillo” and “and1ero” saw similar outcomes. Willo won in weeks one and three with 327,805 and 250,763 points respectively, while Álex “and1ero” Romero claimed week two with 318,631 points. Esteban “estiwinho” Pascual did not reach the top spot in any week.

Kevin Li wins 2025 WSOP Tournament of Champions

Punching his ticket to the 2025 WSOP Tournament of Champions by winning a WSOP Circuit ring at Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary on 8 August 2024, Canadian poker player Kevin Li made the most of the $1 million freeroll by finishing in first place out of 485 entrants.

$200,000 richer following his victory in the Tournament of Champions at Commerce Casino, Li now owns his first career WSOP bracelet as well as the very first bracelet of the summer.

Competing at a final table that included the likes of major tournament crushers such as Daniel Sepiol and Scott Stewart, despite starting the final table with one of the shortest chip stacks Li leveraged his luck and poker skills to finish on top.

At the start of final table play, while Li would seemingly be card dead causing him to not see much action, the same could not be said for his fellow players.

Getting an early double up through Yang Xu with pocket tens to his opponent’s pocket eights, eventual runner-up Shawn Rice maintained momentum that would carry him through the first few eliminations of the final table.

Getting it all-in preflop holding ace-king suited to Scott Stewart’s pocket queens, Rice would eliminate the eight-time WSOP Circuit champion in brutal fashion after Stewart’s turned set would be trounced by Rice’s river straight. The first elimination at the Tournament of Champions final table, Stewart finished in 9th place for $16,100.

After Kevin Lemmer lost the few chips he had remaining to Don Ciaglo to be eliminated in 8th place ($21,000), the next level Rice would bust another set when his rivered seven-high straight proved too much for Xu’s rivered set of fours. Eliminated in 7th place, Xu received $28,000 for his impressive run in the Tournament of Champions.

Despite securing a double-up through Sepiol during Level 26 of the tournament, nine-time WSOP Circuit ring winner Maxwell Young would be eliminated by Ciaglo in 6th place for $37,000 after Ciaglo’s flopped two pair proved too much for Young’s paired ace with king kicker.

With five players remaining, Li would finally start building his stack after doubling up through Karapet Galstyan. Folded to in the small blind, Li shoved his 13 remaining big blinds with king-nine offsuit only for Galstyan to wake up with ace-eight suited. Despite starting behind, a king on the turn would be enough for Li to double up and leave his opponent with crumbs.

With only two big blinds remaining after doubling up Li, it did not take long for Galstyan to be eliminated in 5th place for $50,000.

Following a raise from Li during four-handed play, Sepiol moved all-in for his 17 remaining big blinds and would get the call from Li.

Out-pipped holding ace-ten offsuit to his opponent’s ace-jack, Sepiol was unable to catch up and would be eliminated in 4th place cashing for $70,000.

Only two eliminations away from declaring a new TOC champion, sitting with 37 big blinds Ciaglo moved all-in on the button holding ace-six offsuit. Running into Li’s pocket aces, Ciaglo was unable to crack them and would be eliminated in third place for $100,000.

Despite starting heads-up play with the chip lead, Li would fall behind after being outkicked by Rice with two pair on a paired board.

Although heads-up play began with a tough start, Li slowly grinded his way back and eventually recaptured the chip lead after bullying Rice out of a sizable pot. With 14.6 million chips to Rice’s 4.7 million following the hand, Li would continue applying pressure until ultimately eliminating Rice in 2nd place ($140,000) and securing the 2025 WSOP Tournament of Champions title.

WSOP Circuit thrives at Great Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto

Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto once again played host to the World Series of Poker Circuit Event in partnership with GGPoker and this year’s event shattered expectations, setting new records across the board. Great Canadian Toronto is the only destination in Ontario for hosting World Series of Poker tournaments including prestigious ring and bracelet events.

Running from 10-22 April 2025, the event saw 8,203 total entries across 11 WSOP Circuit Ring Events, marking a 35.9% increase from 2024. The total prize pool soared to an astonishing $7.56 million, up 35.4% year-over-year, as 3,150 unique players brought energy and excitement to Toronto’s premier casino resort. 11 WSOP rings were awarded at the event.

This year, Great Canadian Rewards members had exclusive access to purchase tickets online – a new offering for 2025 – resulting in 2,123 entries registered through the online platform. Last year, online registration was not available.

A highlight of the series was the prestigious $2,000 Main Event, which drew an incredible 2,139 entries and generated a record-setting $3.74 million prize pool, up from $2.8 million last year. With 413 Main Event online qualifiers from GGPoker (another sharp increase from 2024) the buzz around this year’s WSOP Circuit was palpable.

In a storybook moment, Pengxiang Ruan, a Great Canadian Rewards member and restaurant worker from Thornhill, Ontario captured the Main Event title and a life-changing $510,245 first-place prize. A passionate poker player for 10 years, Ruan plans to use his winnings to fulfill a lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant.

The various tournament events included the $3,500 High Roller Event which attracted 291 entries and built a prize pool of $906,465, and the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em drew a total of 847 entries, with a prize pool of $719,950. New events this year included the Ladies, Seniors, and Mystery Bounty, generating prize pools of $59,280, $172,800, and $585,420, respectively.

Pennsylvania joins multi-state online poker agreement

Today, Governor Josh Shapiro signed an agreement accepting Pennsylvania as the sixth member of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) for poker. This expansion of online gaming for poker creates more choice and freedom for an estimated 150,000 online poker players in Pennsylvania and expands the pool of online poker players by more than 50%. With the Commonwealth’s entry into MSIGA, Pennsylvania becomes the largest state in the shared market that now covers over 38 million Americans.

The Commonwealth joins New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, West Virginia, and Michigan as participants in MSIGA, allowing the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) to work with its online operators and the other state gaming agencies to ensure that Pennsylvania’s approximately 150,000 online poker players are provided with the same assurances offered through other online gaming options by using a fair and thoroughly tested platform. This expansion will also afford larger prize pools without requiring an increase in buy-in amounts.

“This is a commonsense step to support hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians, grow our economy, and bring in more revenue to support our schools, our seniors, our small businesses, and more,” said Governor Shapiro. “Three of our neighbors are already part of this agreement – and with this action today, we’re making sure Pennsylvania remains competitive in a rapidly growing online market.

Poker players universally wanted PA to enter the multistate market in order to enhance competition among players, provide access to larger prize pools, grow the poker industry, support smaller operators, and reduce unregulated play.

Online Pennsylvania poker players will be able to participate in the multi-state games beginning on April 28, 2025 will include BetMGM and PA Borgata Online with others expected to join soon.

With 17 retail casinos and 22 sites associated with online casino gaming, the gaming sector employs over 15,000 people in Pennsylvania. The amount of tax revenue generated by legalized gambling in the Commonwealth is nearly $2.7 billion annually. That money is dispersed to Pennsylvania residents as reductions in school property taxes, purchases of goods and services from the agricultural community, and grants available for projects in all 67 counties. An important contributor to the economy, Pennsylvania’s gaming market ranks first in the United states among commercial gaming states in producing tax revenue.
