The Venetian Las Vegas announces new recycling program
LAS VEGAS - The Venetian Las Vegas expands Sands ECO360 recycling efforts as the first Las Vegas-based property, and one of the first in the nation, to develop an innovative program to recycle surgical face masks, which are being used by guests and Team Members as part of the resort's Venetian Clean initiatives.
As part of this pilot project, in partnership with TerraCycle, the discarded masks are collected on-site at The Venetian Resort and sent to a recycling facility where they are separated, shredded and densified into a crumb-like raw material. This material will be used to make repurposed products such as composite lumber for shipping pallets, railroad ties and composite decking.
"Our responsibility to the planet is one of our company's core values," stated George Markantonis, president and COO of The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. "Our Sands ECO360 global sustainability initiative was designed to help minimize our environmental impact, and it reflects our vision as a leader in sustainable resort operations. We continue our journey to a more sustainable future as we seek innovative environmental solutions."
"At TerraCycle, our mission has always been to eliminate waste, recycle the unrecyclable and use our innovative business solutions to minimize human impact on the planet," said TerraCycle Founder and CEO Tom Szaky. "It's through partnerships like the one we enjoy with The Venetian Resort that allows us to fulfill our objective and help preserve the environment for future generations."
Since re-opening in June, The Venetian Resort began diverting discarded surgical face masks from other waste being sent to landfills, through an industry-leading trash-sorting initiative that takes place on property.
In addition to this program, the resort actively sorts its trash, diverting 27 types of items that would otherwise be sent to landfills. Through this program, between 55-60 percent of waste is diverted from local landfills, a number that far surpasses the national average of 32 percent, or the state average of 23 percent.
"As a company that has put sustainability in the forefront of our operation, it was important to find a recycling solution for this PPE, to avoid sending them to our landfills," continued Markantonis.
This project, part of the company's Sands ECO360 initiative, will help provide "proof of concept" for such recycling, to encourage others to replicate the program. Currently, consumer masks are not recycled through main-stream or curbside recycling programs, due to the complexity of the recycling process. Surgical face masks are made of a multitude of materials, and need to be sorted and separated before recycling. In addition a magnet is used to separate the metal nose strips, which can melted and utilized in other recycled materials.

With the simultaneous 9 a.m. reopening of both the Venetian and Palazzo towers, guests and visitors returned to find all of the amenities they know and love from Las Vegas’ largest resort in a clean and safe environment. Their resort experience included two full-service casinos, dozens of noteworthy restaurants and bars, sparkling pools, luxury shopping, the Grand Canal Shoppes and more.
Shortly after opening its doors, eager guests were excited to check into their suites and explore, while Team Members welcomed them throughout the property. Upon arrival to their freshly-cleaned suites, guests were welcomed with a Venetian Clean personal care amenity kit, providing hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, two pairs of gloves and two personal face masks to wear at their own discretion. Among the many luxe offerings throughout the property, including a full-service spa and fitness center, guests also visited the restyled Venetian pool deck, inspired by the Italian Riviera, which features the largest private cabanas on the Las Vegas Strip, and Spritz, a new poolside cafe from 50 Eggs, the founders of Las Vegas favorites Yardbird and Chica.
During the closure, The Venetian developed and rolled out the Venetian Clean Commitment, a set of new cleanliness standards and operational protocols, represented by more than 800 individual initiatives to ensure that guests can experience the world-class resort in a safe and healthy manner. Under the Venetian Clean program, the resort experience has been adapted to follow guidance provided by federal, state and local authorities, while still allowing guests to enjoy the world-class amenities.

Whalen wins MSPT The Venetian Las Vegas Poker Bowl IV
The fourth edition of the MSPT $1,100 buy-in Poker Bowl at The Venetian Las Vegas featured a $1 million guarantee, and a massive turnout of 1,093 entries over three starting flights resulted in a $1,060,210 prize pool.
On Saturday night, the day before the NFL Super Bowl LIV between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, a winner was crowned in the MSPT Poker Bowl IV after Bob Whalen began as the Day 2 chip leader and rode it to victory after a five-way deal was struck.
Whalen took $140,152 as a part of that deal, which was a new career-high surpassing the $129,967 he previously won back in 2009 after taking down a Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Main Event. In 2008, he also finished 79th in the World Series of Poker Main Event for $77,200.
Whalen, formerly from Wisconsin, has lived in Vegas for the past three and a half years playing about town nearly every day of the week. However, it wasn’t his first taste of victory at The Venetian as ten years ago he won three DeepStack tournaments within a two-week span.
Among those to make the money at the top 150 were Terry Fleischer(14th - $11,662), Marko Pantelic (20th - $8,588), Poker Bowl II champ Kfir Nahum (22nd - $7,209), Kathy Liebert (23rd - $7,209), Sorel Mizzi (31st - $4,559), Brett Halan (41st - $3,499), Ashley Sleeth (47th - $3,181), Kenna James (60th - $2,863), Chipp Jett (66th - $2,757), Eric Wasylenko (70th - $2,757), and MSPT Season 1 Running Aces champ Joe Matheson (77th - $2,651).
Final Table Action
MSPT regular Kou Yang was the first final table casualty after running pocket fours into Justin Young’s sixes, and Eyal Al Revah followed him out the door after committing his short stack with king-ten suited only to see Grachia Minasian roll over pocket aces. Revah flopped a flush draw but bricked the turn and river to fall in ninth place.

August openings at The Venetian Las Vegas
“The chance to open our second location at Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian in St. Mark Square places us on the greatest stage and in the most perfect setting to establish the concept. I am excited and thankful to Las Vegas Sands Corp., who trusted our vision and, in a short period of time, gave us the opportunity to have two restaurants within their resort,” says Matteo Ferdinandi, CEO of Factory Place Hospitality Group.
In June, the hospitality group announced plans to open The Factory Kitchen Las Vegas December 2018, also at The Venetian. sixth+mill is a more casual-dining concept from Factory Place Hospitality Group and will open first in Downtown Los Angeles.
“We are thrilled to continue serving our beloved Downtown Los Angeles community that has supported us since day one,” says Ferdinandi.
sixth+mill is led by Mr. Ferdinandi and Factory Place Hospitality Group Culinary Director Angelo Auriana. The restaurant reflects Chef Angelo’s Southern Italian heritage. The focus of the restaurant is intended to elicit the taste and emotion of his childhood memories and offer guests a taste of Southern Italy. Besides the pizza, sixth+mill will also feature small plates, fritters, salads and durum wheat pastas.
Chef Angelo also draws upon a few recipes from his father’s home cooking, such as the Pizza alla Montanara, a fried dough topped with a rich tomato sauce and Scamorza, traditionally served during special family gatherings. The Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, a hearty dish from Campania, is a deep simmering dish of garlic-infused potato gnocchi with a bright tomato sauce, topped with bubbling mozzarella and fresh basil.
Chef Angelo has imported a Mario Acunto’s Neapolitan-style wood-fired oven encased with refractory bricks, allowing a thermal source of heat to provide consistency throughout the baking process. A traditional Italian spiral mixer slow-mixes the dough, allowing for a better fermentation process that develops a lighter dough and signature flavor.
Those elements, paired with Chef Angelo’s own natural yeast and a mix of flours, creates pizza that is slightly crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside, light and highly digestible. Imported ingredients including cheeses, cured meats, and olive oil from the mountainous terrain of Molise, coupled with local produce, enhance the authenticity and freshness of each dish.
An affordable wine list, designed by Factory Place Hospitality Group Beverage Director, Sommelier and Partner Francine Diamond-Ferdinandi, features selections that correspond to the menu and focus on Italian Southern Regions. The Spirits complement sixth+mill pizzeria and bar’s thoughtful combination of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Draft beers offer crisp and refreshing selections from local breweries and beyond, while the cocktail list includes the San Gennaro: Bols Genever, Carpano and a splash of soda and a vibrant red Malafemmena or “bad woman” cocktail, named after the famous Italian song, made with tomato juice, spices and vodka.
Ferdinandi and Auriana share the vision of imparting their Italian roots and memories through food and welcoming hospitality. sixth+mill pizzeria and bar is the second Las Vegas-based restaurant for Factory Place Hospitality Group. It will join its sister restaurant The Factory Kitchen Las Vegas — scheduled to open December 2018 — at Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian in St. Mark’s Square in April 2019.
