Italian online poker reform: transparency, safety, and European pooling ahead

Italy’s online poker industry is undergoing a regulatory transformation. A multi-year reform plan is being implemented to strengthen transparency, player protection, and market competitiveness, while cracking down on unauthorized platforms and tax evasion.

One of the most important developments is the potential re-entry into shared liquidity agreements with other European countries. This would allow Italian players to compete at online tables with players from France, Spain, and Portugal, leading to bigger prize pools and more diverse tournaments.

New licensing criteria are being introduced, with more stringent requirements and enhanced oversight. Deposits will be subject to increased traceability, and fraud prevention will be supported by automated monitoring systems.

Another key reform is the creation of a public oversight committee for responsible gaming. This body will include industry representatives, players, and regulators, aiming to protect consumers—especially minors and at-risk individuals—and promote sustainable gaming habits.

If successfully implemented, these reforms could usher in a new era for Italian poker, creating a safer, more vibrant, and internationally competitive online environment.
