Sports stars join PokerStars European Poker Tour

Sports stars Neymar Jr, Gerard Pique and Sergio Garcia have joined over 4,000 people in Barcelona to compete in the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) in Barcelona, one of the most popular poker festivals in Europe.

With a buy-in of €25,000, the stars will be playing for charities close to their hearts. Neymar with his brother and teammates Lo Celso, Arthur Melo, Barcelona midfielders, and friends are playing for The Neymar Jr. Project Institute which offers free classes for football, volleyball, swimming, judo, basketball, reading, languages, music, dance and information technology to about 2,300 under privileged children between 7-14 years old in São Paulo, Brazil.

Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil national forward, Neymar Jr is no stranger to the poker table, having competed in his first EPT event in Barcelona three years ago in 2015. During PokerStars-sponsored Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP) São Paulo in July this year, Neymar Jr finished 6th in the Super High Roller event, cashing $79,440 ($21,470), with a total of 288 entries.

Spanish professional golfer and keen poker player, Sergio García, will be playing for The Sergio Garcia Foundation to contribute to the social inclusion of economically deprived children and youth, through social assistance benefits and the practice of sport as free-time activity supporting a large variety of non-government organizations and humanitarian associations.

Pique, who is playing for the Barefoot Foundation, a Colombian charity founded by Pique’s wife Shakira, brought his brother along too. He has competed in EPT Barcelona events for several years, with his best result last year when he finished 5th in the €25,500 No Limit Hold’em for €129,350. At the time, Pique said, “I love playing poker and the PokerStars European Poker Tour in Barcelona is one of the best tournaments in the world, right here in my beautiful home city. It's fantastic to be here, win or lose.”

The Sportstars will be joined by PokerStars Ambassador Andre Akkari, who will be playing for Right to Play, PokerStars official charity partner, who use the power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity across the globe.

One of PokerStars most popular sponsored live events, the record-breaking EPT Barcelona, which kicked off on 21 August will continue until 2 September at Casino Barcelona. During that time a total of 10 Platinum Passes will be awarded throughout the festival. Platinum Passes will be awarded to the winners of the National, Cup, Live Qualifier and Main Event, in addition to the longest lasting qualifier (live and online) in the Main Event. Players who make it through to Day 2 of the National, Cup, Main Event and Tournaments #23 and #28 will be eligible for the Crazy Pineapple Hand Challenge.
