George Danzer wins WSOP Player of the Year

Team PokerStars.com Pro, George Danzer, has won the 2014 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award, fending off the challenge of American player Brandon Shack-Harris at the WSOP Asia Pacific event in Melbourne.

Danzer usurped Brandon Shack-Harris at the top of the POTY leaderboard during the WSOP APAC festival, by winning his third World Series bracelet of the year in the AU $5,000 8-Game Mixed Event for AU $84,600 (US $74,768) and cashing in two other events.

Reflecting on his win, Danzer said: “I’m still delirious and don’t know if I will ever realize what has happened. My goal since 2005 was to win a bracelet and I’ve fought hard every year for one. Then it happened, and a week later again. From there, everything else just developed it by itself. It’s similar to golf – you just change a tiny thing in your swing and suddenly you are successful.”

Danzer won his first and second WSOP bracelets earlier this year in Las Vegas, taking down the $10k Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo and Razz events for a combined haul of nearly $650,000. He cashed a total of 10 times in WSOP events this year for a total of $867,649, made five final tables, and amassed 923.5 POTY points, which was nearly 100 points more than runner-up, Shack-Harris, and 365 points more than John Hennigan who came third.

Danzer’s incredible run this year has taken his live tournament winnings to $2,073,305.
